Song and dance and smiles

Our annual variety show for local seniors

On 3rd March we hosted out annual concert for groups of senior citizens from across South Holland.

The ever-popular evening event is held at the South Holland Centre and is free to those attending. The packed playhouse included many audience members who were return visitors.

Combining presentations by a variety of local entertainment artists, the two hour show had the audience clapping, tapping feet and singing along.

Compere for the evening was our club president, Graham Dawson.

Graham said ‘We love to host this annual event, as a thank you to the older members of our community’.

Rotarian Rodney Britten entertained on the piano while the audience excitedly settled into their seats.

Then the evening’s entertainment opened with a selection of songs from the Spongebob Squarepants musical, sung by the cast from Act II, including a fantastic rendition of ‘Hero is my Middle Name‘.

The young performers charmed the audience with their amazing vocals and cheeky confidence.

This was followed by well-known local singer, Jane Howell, who sang ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ from Les Miserables, followed by the popular ‘Always Something There to Remind Me’.

Ukrainian vocalist Oksana Ponaida kept the audience spellbound with a beautiful rendition of ‘Celtic Woman‘, followed by a beautiful Ukrainian folk song.

Velvet Duo, Helen & Tommy, gave a great selection of songs from musicals, taking the audience from Little Shop of Horrors to Cabaret, Les Miserables and Oklahoma.

Next came a brand new duo. Saxophonist Ardern Little and pianist David Schofiield only met a few weeks ago.  They gave soft jazz renditions of ‘That Old Feeling,’ ‘Autumn Leaves ‘and ‘Fly Me to The Moon’.

The South Holland Singers followed, with moving vocals, singing ‘Cantate Domino‘ and ‘Alleluia‘.

The evening ended with a selection from crooner Alan Jackson.  The audience were soon clapping along to Frank Sinatra and Matt Munro numbers.  Hands were in the air for the finale, with everyone singing along to ‘Sweet Caroline‘.

What a great showcase of local talent!

Evenings like this wouldn’t happen without the kind support of all the entertainers, who gave up their time to make this concert a success. Thank you to all of you.

Thanks to Rotarian Alan Rumsey for organising.
