Annual Gateway Sports Day

Another rewarding annual event for the disabled. We are very fortunate in having access to our local sports hall with external track and field facilities. It is an olympian event for the contenders.
For many years we have set up this event on the first sunday in July. The weather has been consistently good and the competitors, over the years have been drawn from the gateway clubs of Spalding, Boston, Skegness and Bourne.
The abilities of the participants are very varied and the events are selected to allow for this. Our volunteer event organiser and long-time member of the nene valley harriers, Arthur Simmonds, with his small team make efficient masters of the field and also efficient monitors of the scores, the enthusiasm of the participants is remarkable and is very rewarding to see.
One other very popular ingredient of the competition is the interval for tea. Trestle tables groan with sandwiches, various savouries and many cakes of all sizes and flavours. There are soft drinks, tea and coffee and crisps and snacks. all this is provided year on year by the inner wheel club of Spalding and wives of rotarians, and is greatly appreciated.
Last year saw a departure from the usual routine by the addition of indoor events such as kurling, both to allow for the less than fit and the slightly older competitors and it is intended to build on this.
Overall, this is one of the “events of the year”, and continues to be well supported.
